DISTRIBUTED DISCRIMINATION AT BARRETT DISTRIBUTION?

COMPANY AGREES TO PAY $60K AND WILL MODIFY PRACTICES

Two companies -- Barrett Distribution Centers, along with its staffing agency, Supreme Staffing -- are alleged to have engaged in discriminatory hiring practices (based on national origin) at Barrett’s Memphis (Tenn.) facilities. And when an employee voiced a complaint about the hiring process, he was ultimately fired.

Believing that such conduct violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed suit, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, Western Division, EEOC v. Supreme Staffing, LLC and Barrett Distrib. Centers, LLC, 2:23-cv-02507-SHL-tmp, seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief.

In a recently announced settlement of the dispute, in addition to a $60,000 payment, Barrett has agreed to modify its employment related policies and practices and will report any discrimination related complaints to the agency on a semi-annual basis.

In a written statement, Faye Williams, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Memphis District Office noted that, “As retaliation claims continue to rise, we applaud those are who are willing to bravely step up and report discriminatory treatment …. We also commend Barrett for its commitment to reaching an early resolution that will compensate the affected former employee as well as ensuring that all staffing agencies Barrett works with are aware of Barrett’s pledge to combat unlawful discrimination and retaliation in its workspace.”

Looks like Barrett redistributed some of its cash there.
