CLINIC AGREES TO PAY $95K TO SETTLE DISCRIMINATION CLAIM
Passages Family Support, a clinic based out of Spokane, Washington, recently agreed to pay $95,000 to resolve a discrimination claim filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
The non-profit organization supposedly denied a mental health therapist a “job related accommodation for a religious belief.” Instead of reasonably accommodating the therapist’s request, they terminated her employment.
Believing that such conduct violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the EEOC undertook an investigation of the claim and was able to reach a pre-litigation resolution of the dispute.
In addition to the monetary pay-out, the clinic has agreed to modify its employment and training practices.
In a written statement, Elizabeth M. Cannon, director of the EEOC’s Seattle Field Office noted that, “Providing reasonable accommodations for employees based on their religious beliefs is not optional …. An accommodation that allows an employee to perform their functions and causes no undue hardship is reasonable, and therefore must be provided. We appreciate Passages Family Support for participating in the conciliation process and taking steps to protect current and future employees from discrimination.”
You think Passages found religion after that?
