DOJ SUES ROBOCALLING COMPANY FOR “ILLEGAL TELEMARKETING”
On May 12, 2023, the United States Department of Justice, along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a federal lawsuit against XCAST LABS, Inc., for facilitating “billions of illegal robocalls to American consumers.” Many of these the robocalls are said to have been targeted to individuals on the National Do Not Call Registry and “falsely claimed affiliations with government entities.” And the company purportedly continued with this activity even after being informed of its “illegality.”
In addition to monetary penalties, the complaint seeks injunctive relief enjoining the conduct.
In a written statement, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division, noted that “The Department of Justice is committed to stopping telecommunications providers from enabling unscrupulous telemarketers to bombard American consumers with illegal robocalls …. We will continue to work with the FTC to enforce the Telemarketing Sales Rule.”
Bet they’re the ones not taking calls, now.
