DUMPLINGS WITH BAD (W)RAPS
▫️
Now, according to some food historians, dumplings have been around since 3,600 B.C., with the first recorded recipe appearing in a Roman cookbook called “Apicus,” which is believed to have been written around 400 A.D.
▫️
While the Chinese iteration typically comes to mind, dumplings are any kind of dish made with cheese, meat or vegetable fillings wrapped in dough. So, empanadas, mantis, momos, pirogis, raviolis, samosa, and tortellini, are all members of that family.
▫️
TV personality, chef, and author, Alton Brown, likes to make his version of this dish using: tofu, carrots, cabbage, red peppers, scallions, ginger, cilantro, soy, hoisin, sesame oil, egg, salt, and pepper. (Interestingly, the Food Network page notes, if you were to buy the ingredients at Walmart, the thing would cost you around 14 cents per serving to make at home.)
▫️
So, imagine our indignation when we ended up paying $22+ (after tax/tip) – that’s about $4.50 a piece -- for drab, tasteless, watery mush. Because the kitchen should never have dumped this dumpling dish on us, we rated it a shameful “F.”
▫️
Yes, as far as we’re concerned, these dumplings have an awful (w)rap
