TUNA SHOULD NEITHER REPEL NOR REBEL
“Dada” is the name of an art movement and it’s an “irrational” and “irreverent” one at that.

It evolved in the early 20th century, in response to World War I — which left some ten million dead, and twenty million wounded — and sought to mock materialism and nationalism. According to some historians, it’s regarded as “anti-art” … or at least a rebellion against what were then traditional notions of culture and aesthetics.

The restaurant DADA, located at 52 N Swinton Ave, in Delray Beach, Florida, has been operating from a historic site, known as the Tarrimore house, for the past 22 years. Its website notes that it strives “to create an environment that is original, unique, and forces us to step outside the box.”

We last visited the place about a decade ago and didn’t enjoy the experience. But we thought we’d “step outside the box” and give the place another try. And as luck would have it, on the night of our visit, the restaurant was offering a special “restaurant month” promotion; a 3-course meal for $45 per person. Starters included: “Dada Dates, Crispy Cauliflower, Grilled Brie for Two,” and “Togarashi Seared Tuna.”

The fish, a “Chilled Yellowfin Tuna, Ponzu Sauce, Spicy Mayo, Guacamole, Cilantro,” was the first dish to arrive at our table. And if you didn’t know, “togarashi” is a spicy chili pepper, but many restaurants will use a chili pepper mixture which will typically include sesame seeds, nori flakes, ground sansho pepper, mandarin orange peel, ground ginger, and poppy seed or hemp seed.

We HATE when our food is over-spiced, and that was the problem with this dish. And because it came with only four small pieces, that were inedible because of their intense “heat,” we rated this nonsensical, irrational, anti-appetizer an “F.”
