In addition to locations in San Francisco and Houston, you’ll find “International Smoke,” a collaboration between two noted chefs — Ayesha Curry and Michael Mina — over at the Aventura Mall (north of Miami).
Offering their respective takes on American and international barbecued items, the chefs sought to “re-create that special feeling reminiscent of a backyard barbecue, where you get to experience a variety of different flavors and cultures with family and friends.”
But based on our recent visit, we don’t think they succeeded in recreating a “backyard” anything. We found the space surprisingly lackluster, and the food offerings even more so.
Since people rave about it, we decided to start our meal with “AYESHA’S FRESH BAKED CORNBREAD” — thai red curry butter ($6).
If you’re looking for something light, fluffy, and moist, be forewarned.
While they weren’t awful, because they were sweeter, drier, denser, and more “cake-like” than we preferred (and given that some found the $6 ask to be a bit hefty, in light of the small portion size), this dish couldn’t score higher than a “C.”
