On Wednesday, February 23, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge and members of the Arab American and Egyptian American communities of Brooklyn to raise the flag of Egypt over Borough Hall.

"Egyptians want the freedom to build better economic lives for themselves and their families," said BP Markowitz. "They want the freedom to do all they can to reach the zenith of their God-given potential--just like in America. In other words, they want what our Declaration of Independence calls "inalienable rights"--rights that are universal to all human beings: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The American Dream is now the Egyptian Dream."

By borough, Brooklyn has New York City's second largest population of Egyptian Americans, mostly residing in Bay Ridge.
