SCRIPPS PAYS ABOUT $7 MILLION TO SETTLE EEOC DISCRIMINATION CHARGES

COMPANY ACCUSED OF DISCRIMINATION BASED ON AGE AND DISABILITY

Scripps Clinical Medical Group – which describes itself as a ” multispecialty practice of over 950 doctors and Advanced Practice Clinicians in 60+ specialties” – recently agreed to settle age and discrimination charges brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleging that the Group had wrongfully subjected a “class of physicians to a mandatory retirement age, regardless of the individuals’ abilities to do the job.”

In addition to paying $6,875,000 to the impacted individuals, the Group has agreed to modify its employment related polices and practices, and has agreed to rescind its mandatory retirement policy.

In a written statement, said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows noted that “Older workers make crucial contributions to our nation’s workplaces …. With demographics showing that many people are remaining in the workforce longer, it is critical for employers to understand the ADEA’s protections for older workers. For that reason, the Commission has included discrimination against older workers among the priorities identified in its new Strategic Enforcement Plan.”

Think that was part of the script?
