Dear Supporter,
The fight is not over yet.
The current rent laws have been extended and will remain in effect until 11:59pm on Tuesday, June 23.
This extension ensures that tenants will continue to be protected while giving Albany more time to negotiate for newer, stronger rent laws. We hope that by then, agreements that protect tenants and preserve affordable housing will be made.
You can take action by calling Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390 or by emailing him using this form and letting him know how crucial it is for New York to have stronger rent laws.
If the rent laws expire again after Tuesday, here's the information from a previous email we sent out about what you should do:
- DO NOT MOVE OUT. You are still a tenant of your apartment. The landlord cannot put you out of your apartment without going to court. If the landlord tries to do so, call the police. This is illegal.
- If you have a LEASE, you are protected at least as long as the lease term.
- If you have a renewal lease, SIGN it and send it back immediately.
- If your LEASE expires on or before September 13, 2015, you are entitled to a renewal lease and you should be protected. If your landlord tries to evict you, call the Public Advocate at 212-669-7250.
- If you receive court papers or are being threatened or harassed by your landlord because the rent laws have expired, call the Public Advocate at 212-669-7250. The Public Advocate has staff who can advise you and can get you an attorney if you need one.
- If you are RENT CONTROLLED (not rent stabilized, you've been in your apartment since 1971), you will be protected by the New York City laws which will not expire until 2018.
You'll hear again from us early next week. In the meantime, please be sure to make your voice heard and contact Governor Cuomo!
