Lucas,
I wanted to take a minute to say Happy Father's Day to the dads across
America. Being a father isn't easy, it requires patience, unconditional
love and sacrifice to help our kids grow with the confidence to follow
their dreams.
Today, I am thinking about two men who had great significance in my life.
My father, a veteran of the Marine's, instilled in me the importance
of responsibility, honesty and discipline. My grandfather, one of the
youngest elected members in the history of the Virginia legislature, showed
me how a devoted public servant could help his community. They certainly
helped me to have the confidence to follow my dreams.
In Congress, I have worked to encourage strong families even as the shape
of a family has changed. Men need paternity time off to help care for
newborn children; same sex couples need the legal right to be married
in all 50 states; and in a time where a family with two working parents
is commonplace, we need to make sure that all workers have paid time off
in order to care for a sick child.
While I continue to advocate for these positions, it is up to each and
every parent to be a good role model for their kids, every single day.
I am so proud to be able to represent the fathers of Ventura County. This
Father’s Day, I hope you will join me in remembering, appreciating,
and celebrating all of our fathers.
It is an honor to serve you in Congress,
Julia Brownley
