Dear Friends,
Once again, Albany hasn't failed to disappoint. The rent-stabilization laws will expire at midnight tonight unless an agreement is reached.
If you are a rent-stabilized or rent-controlled tenant, please know that you have no reason to be alarmed. If the laws expire, it is likely to be brief, and you have rights.
Public Advocate Letitia James has prepared the following fact sheet for tenants:
TENANT ALERT: IF RENT LAWS EXPIRE ON JUNE 15 YOU STILL HAVE RIGHTS!
1. DO NOT MOVE OUT. You are still a legal tenant of your apartment. Your landlord cannot put you out of your apartment without going to court. If the landlord tries to do so, call the police. This is illegal.
2. LOOK AT YOUR LEASE. If you have a LEASE, you are protected at least until the lease expires.
3. SIGN YOUR RENEWAL LEASE. If you have a RENEWAL LEASE, sign it and send it back immediately. If your lease expires on or before September 13, 2015, you are entitled to a renewal.
4. KNOW YOUR STATUS. If you are rent controlled (not rent stabilized), you will be protected by the New York City laws, which do not expire until 2018, and you should be protected. The Public Advocate has established a legal hotline that can be reached at 212-669-7250 or gethelp@pubadvocate.nyc.gov.
This is about more than a law. This is about the future of affordability in New York City. Please contact our lawmakers in Albany and let them know that we demand that our rent laws are renewed and strengthened:
Governor Cuomo’s office: 518-474-8390
Speaker Heastie’s office: 518-455-3791
Senator Flanagan’s office: 518-455-2071
As always, I am here to help. You can contact my District Office at (212) 564-7757 between 10 am and 6 pm on Mondays to Fridays, or email me at district3@council.nyc.gov.
The next Housing Clinic at my District Office will be on Tuesday, July 14, at 5:30 pm. My District Office is located at 224 West 30th Street, Suite #1206 (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues).
In service,
